For local businesses, your Google Business Profile is arguably the single most important digital asset you own. It is the first thing most customers see, and Google uses the information in your profile to determine where you rank in local search results. A complete, well-optimized profile does not just look professional -- it directly influences whether you appear in the coveted local 3-pack that shows above organic results.
Despite its importance, the majority of local businesses have incomplete or poorly optimized profiles. Studies consistently show that fewer than 30% of businesses have filled out every available field, and most have not posted an update in months. This represents both a problem and an opportunity: if your competitors are neglecting their profiles, even modest improvements to yours can yield significant ranking gains.
Google uses three primary factors to rank local businesses: relevance, proximity, and prominence. Your Google Business Profile directly affects relevance and prominence, making it the primary lever you can pull to improve your local rankings.
Relevance measures how well your profile matches the searcher's query. Google scans your business name, categories, description, services, products, and attributes to determine relevance. A plumber who lists "emergency pipe repair" as a service will rank higher for that query than a plumber with a generic, unfilled profile. Every empty field is a missed opportunity for Google to match you to a search.
Prominence is Google's measure of how well-known and trusted your business is. This is influenced by review count, average rating, review recency, photo engagement, website authority, social mentions, and directory citations. Businesses with 100+ reviews, a 4.5+ star rating, and regular photo uploads score significantly higher on prominence than businesses with 10 reviews and a handful of stock photos.

Google has publicly stated that complete and accurate business information helps them understand your business and match it to relevant searches. In practice, this means that businesses with fully filled profiles appear in more search queries and rank higher in the ones they do appear in.
Consider two dentists in the same city. Dentist A has filled out categories, services, description, attributes, posted 50 photos, has 120 reviews, and posts weekly updates. Dentist B has a basic profile with the name, address, phone number, 5 photos, and 15 reviews. Even if Dentist B has a better website, Dentist A will almost certainly outrank them in Google Maps because their profile gives Google far more signals to work with.
The impact compounds over time. A complete profile attracts more clicks, which generates more engagement signals (calls, direction requests, website visits), which in turn improves your prominence score and pushes you even higher in rankings. It is a virtuous cycle that starts with completeness.
After analyzing thousands of Google Business Profiles, these are the most common mistakes we see:
Profile Completeness (25 points): Fill out every single field available to you. This includes business name, categories (primary + secondary), description, services, products, attributes, opening date, and business highlights. Use the description to naturally include keywords your customers search for. Select all relevant attributes -- things like "wheelchair accessible," "free Wi-Fi," or "women-led" help you appear in filtered searches.
Review Health (30 points): Reviews carry the heaviest weight because they are the strongest signal of trust and quality. Aim for a steady flow of new reviews rather than bursts. Ask every satisfied customer for a review using a direct link. Respond to all reviews thoughtfully. Do not buy fake reviews -- Google's detection is sophisticated and the penalty is severe (profile suspension).
Visual Content (20 points): Upload at least 50 photos as a baseline, with 100+ being the target. Include a professional cover photo, logo, interior shots from multiple angles, your team at work, before-and-after examples, product photos, and seasonal images. Add new photos at least weekly. Video is increasingly important -- short clips of your service or facility perform well.
Posting Activity (10 points): Google Business Posts are short updates that appear on your profile. They expire after 7 days, so consistency matters more than volume. Post at least once per week with offers, events, tips, or news. Include an image and a clear call-to-action. Businesses that post weekly see significantly higher engagement than those posting monthly or never.
Category Optimization (12 points): Your primary category is the single strongest individual ranking signal in Google Maps. Make sure it is the most specific match for your business. Add 2-3 secondary categories to capture related searches. Critically, your business description should include the keywords from your primary category — this alignment signals relevance to Google.
Business Hours (8 points): Confirm your regular hours are accurate for all 7 days of the week. Add special hours for holidays and events proactively -- do not wait for customers to report incorrect hours. If you have seasonal hours, update them before the season changes. Mark temporary closures properly rather than removing hours.
Trust Signals (10 points): Trust signals include whether your listing is verified by Google, whether you have a Q&A section with owner responses, and whether your business name follows Google guidelines (no keyword stuffing). A verified listing ranks higher and gives you access to post updates, respond to reviews, and edit your profile. Keyword stuffing your business name (adding service keywords or locations) can lead to suspension.

A GBP completeness score measures how fully optimized your Google Business Profile is across seven categories: profile completeness, review health, visual content, posting activity, category optimization, business hours, and trust signals. Scores range from 0 to 100, with 80+ considered excellent. The score is weighted to reflect how much each category impacts your local search ranking.

At minimum, aim for 25-50 high-quality photos including your storefront, interior, team, products, and work examples. Add new photos weekly to keep your profile active and signal freshness to Google's algorithm.

Regular posting keeps your profile active and generates engagement signals that Google uses to measure prominence. Post types include offers, events, product updates, and general updates about your business.
